Biography

Early life

Born in southern Germany, he studied in Switzerland and continued his research while working at a patent office. Rather than moving directly into a regular university post, he persisted with his own questions.

Achievements

In 1905 he published papers on special relativity and the light quantum hypothesis, and he later completed general relativity. His Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for his work on the photoelectric effect.

Character & anecdotes

He left Germany as the Nazis rose and moved to the United States. Though known as a pacifist, he was also caught up in the tensions of an age shaped by the development of nuclear weapons.

Historical Impact

Einstein's work laid foundations reaching from cosmology and nuclear power to modern technologies such as GPS. His life also shows that scientific discovery cannot be separated from states, war, exile, and ethics.
