Biography

Early life

Born into a prestigious family in Paris, he was educated during the Enlightenment. He gained experience as a local administrator in Limoges and developed an interest in agricultural, tax, and commercial issues.

Achievements

When he became the Inspector General of Finance, he attempted to liberalize grain distribution, review privileged burdens, and promote fiscal reconstruction. However, he was overthrown due to opposition from his privileged status and the imperial court, and his reforms were not fully established.

Character & anecdotes

Turgot is often talked about with the question, ``Would the revolution have been avoided if the reforms had been successful?'' He is a symbolic figure when considering the rigidity of the old system.

Historical Impact

If you study Turgot, you will realize that the French Revolution did not suddenly occur, but rather resulted from a series of financial crises and reform setbacks. It will also be easier to understand the relationship between Enlightenment thought and national administration. The limits of reforming the old system may also be considered.
