Early life

Born into the family of historian Ban Biao, his older brother Ban Gu and younger sister Ban Akira were also raised in a family known for their academics. He moved from writing to military and diplomatic work, and was involved in the Western Region policy of the Later Han Dynasty.

Achievements

As the protector of the western region, he promoted alliances with other countries and military operations to counter the Xiongnu forces. He expanded the diplomatic sphere of the Han Dynasty by attempting to dispatch envoys to the distant Great Qin Dynasty.
