Biography

Early life

Born in Versailles as a member of the Bourbon family, he lived in exile during the French Revolution. After the Restoration, he was supported by the conservative aristocracy and clergy and succeeded his older brother Louis XVIII.

Achievements

As king, he pursued reactionary policies and tried to restore the supremacy of royal power by controlling the press and dissolving parliament. However, the July Edict of 1830 caused a backlash, and he abdicated in the July Revolution.

Character & anecdotes

After the abdication of Charles X, the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe began in France. The change of kings shows that even if the monarchy remained in place, ideas about sovereignty and political participation had changed significantly.

Historical Impact

If you study Charles X, you will see that a major point of contention in Europe after the French Revolution was the extent to which the old system could be restored. Restoration monarchy, liberalism, and the resurgence of revolution can be understood as a series of modern politics.
