Biography

Early life

They are believed to have come from present-day Henan, and after the unification of the Qin Dynasty, they were included in lower-level military and labor service. It is said that the direct trigger for the uprising was that they were late for a deadline while traveling to the frontier and feared punishment.

Achievements

In 209 BC, he and Wu Guang started a rebellion in Dazawago, calling themselves the Zhang Chu government. Although the rebellion was short-lived, it stimulated the former Six Kingdoms forces and peasant revolts in various places, and greatly shook the Qin Empire.

Character & anecdotes

It is often associated with the phrase, ``The king and general have no seeds.'' The logic of the rebellion, that ruling was not determined by one's birth, left a strong impression on later generations.

Historical Impact

Studying Chen Sheng shows that the Qin unified state had a strong system, but it quickly collapsed due to harsh mobilization and dissatisfaction in local society. The trend toward the Chu-Han War can be understood not only from the heroic stories but also from the social backlash.
