Biography

Early life

Born in Zhejiang, he studied military affairs in Japan. He joined Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary movement and helped form the Nationalist army as commandant of the Whampoa Military Academy.

Achievements

He advanced the Northern Expedition, established the Nationalist government at Nanjing, and sought to unify China. He led the resistance against Japan but, after the war, lost the civil war to the Communists and moved to Taiwan.

During the Xi'an Incident, he was detained by Zhang Xueliang and others, a turning point that led him to accept an anti-Japanese united front with the Communists. It was an event in which personal power and national crisis intersected.
