Biography

Early life

He was born as Xiaobai, a prince of Qi, but his year of birth is unclear. He went into exile due to internal conflict, won a succession battle with his brother, and became Duke of Qi in 685 BC.

Achievements

He appointed Guan Zhong as prime minister and established the military system and economy, making Qi a powerful state. While respecting the Zhou royal family, he advocated ``respecting the king and expelling the barbarians'' and acting as the leader of the feudal lords.

Character & anecdotes

There is a well-known anecdote in which he did not punish a Kanchu who had once targeted him, but appointed him based on his ability. In his later years, the authority of the ruler was greatly shaken due to succession disputes and confusion within the imperial court.

Historical Impact

When we study Duke Qihuan, we learn that politics during the Spring and Autumn period was based on alliances, prestige, and military power among feudal lords, rather than on the centralization of the dynasty. He is an important figure in understanding the decentralized international order of ancient China. A political form called a hegemon is also conceivable.
