Biography

Early life

Born as a prince of the Jin Dynasty, Chongmi, he became embroiled in domestic succession disputes and wandered around the country for a long time. In the princely states of the Spring and Autumn period, exile of the royal family and support from other countries were important elements of politics.

Achievements

After returning to Japan and becoming the Duke of Jin, he reorganized his politics and won a victory over Chu at the Battle of Chengpu in 632 BC. He helped the Zhou royal family, was recognized as the leader of the feudal lords, and was counted as one of the Five Champions of Spring and Autumn.

Character & anecdotes

The story of Prince Jinwen's exile was told as a portrait of a monarch who gained talent through hardship. It is understood that his experience traveling to various countries led to his later diplomacy and recruitment.

Historical Impact

Studying the Dukes of Jinwen reveals that their hegemony during the Spring and Autumn period was supported not only by military power, but also by exile, alliances, rituals, and relationships with the Zhou royal family. Along with Duke Qihwan, he is a representative of hegemonic politics. The relationship between exile experience and political legitimacy can also be traced.
