Biography

Early life

Born into a wealthy family in Paris, he studied under the painter Thomas Couture. While studying classical paintings, he moved toward boldly depicting cities and people from his time.

Achievements

With ``Luncheon on the Grass'' and ``Olympia,'' he shook up the common sense of the salon and presented a new type of painting depicting modern life. His brush strokes and compositions also inspired Impressionist painters.

Character & anecdotes

Although it did not officially participate in Impressionist exhibitions, it was considered a spiritual center for young painters. It is distinctive in that it sought evaluation within the existing system while changing that system.

Historical Impact

If you study Manet, you will understand that modern art was born not only from changes in technique, but also from social questions about what could be the subject of painting. When you look at the people's activities and works together, it becomes easier to understand the terms in textbooks as concrete historical trends.
