Biography

Early life

He was born into the imperial family of the Northern Song Dynasty and ascended the throne after Huizong's abdication. While the Song Dynasty prospered with its urban culture and economy, it was also deeply concerned about military diplomacy with the Liao and Jin to the north.

Achievements

During his short reign, he was forced to deal with the Jin army, but was unable to recover from the chaos within the imperial court and from his military inferiority. In 1127, the Northern Song Dynasty came to an end with the fall of Kaifeng and the capture of the emperor.

Character & anecdotes

Qinzong was not so much an individual who achieved great reforms as an emperor who ascended the throne during a dynastic crisis. The Jingkang Incident is told in Chinese history as a contrast between cultural prosperity and military weakness.

Historical Impact

Studying Qinzong reveals how the highly civilized state of the Song Dynasty was unable to respond to military competition with northern ethnic states. He is a person who understands the transition from the Northern Song to the Southern Song. Political responsibility for the fall of the dynasty may also be considered.
