Biography

Early life

He started out as a relatively low-ranking soldier in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and rose through the ranks during the war. After the Sixteen Kingdoms of the Five Hus, China was divided into two regimes, the North and the South, competing for legitimacy with each other.

Achievements

He increased his military prestige by attacking Later Qin and other areas in the Northern Expedition. In 420, he received Zen transfer from the Eastern Jin Dynasty and founded the Liu Song Dynasty, creating a pattern for a new dynastic change in the Southern Dynasty.

Character & anecdotes

Liu Yu's rise in the ranks indicates that we have entered an era in which not only members of the clan aristocrats but also individuals with military power can control the dynasty. He is a person who well represents the military aspect of Southern Dynasty politics.

Historical Impact

Studying Liu Yu shows that the dynastic changes during the Northern and Southern Dynasties were justified not only by lineage, but also by the success of the Northern Expedition, military support, and the form of Zen concession. It was the turning point from the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Southern Dynasty and Song Dynasty. The conditions for the establishment of the Southern Dynasty government may also be considered.
