Biography

Early life

Born to a noble family in Navarre, he studied at the University of Paris. There he met Ignatius of Loyola and others and became one of the companions who founded the Society of Jesus.

Achievements

Using the sea routes of the Portuguese maritime empire, he traveled to Goa, Southeast Asia, and Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1549 and began Christian missionary work there.

In Japan, Xavier encountered differences of language and social order while attempting to preach. He hoped to undertake a mission in China but died before he could land there.
