Biography

Early life

Born in the Aragon region, he gained a position as a court painter in Madrid. In Spain at the end of the 18th century, Enlightenment ideas, royal power, and the Napoleonic Wars were shaking up society.

Achievements

He expressed the dark side of human society through his portraits, the print collection ``Los Caprichos,'' and works depicting war. ``May 3, 1808'' became a representative painting indicting the violence of modern warfare.

Character & anecdotes

In his later years, Goya lost his hearing and began to create more internal and disturbing works. Although he was a commissioned painter for the imperial court, he is unique in that he looked at the absurdity of power and society.

Historical Impact

When you study Goya, you can understand the process by which art changed from just depicting the glory of royalty to expressing war, fear, and the suffering of the people. He is an important figure as a pioneer of modern art. The relationship between art and political testimony can also be seen.
