Biography

Early life

It is said to have been born during the period of turmoil following the fall of Goguryeo. With the expansion of Tang's control, Silla's unification of the Korean peninsula, and the movements of northern groups, a new political order was sought in the former Goguryeo region.

Achievements

Around 698, he founded Shinkoku, which later became Balhae, with Higashimuzan as his base. While coordinating the conflict with the Tang Dynasty and the feudal relations, he created the foundation for the formation of a nation that spanned Manchuria and northern Korea.

Character & anecdotes

Later interpretations differ as to whether Daejoei was of Goguryeo or Yaman lineage. This makes us think that Balhae was a border state that included multiple ethnic groups and regions.

Historical Impact

When we study Dae Jo Rong, we understand that East Asian history was active not only in the Chinese dynasty and the Korean Peninsula, but also in a wide political space that included Manchuria and the northern powers. Indispensable for understanding Northeast Asia during the Tang Dynasty. It can also be used for comparison with surrounding areas from the same era.
