Biography

Early life

Born in Tokyo, he was educated as the crown prince of Emperor Taisho. He visited Europe in 1921, served as regent, and ascended the throne in 1926. During this period, Japan was torn between party politics and the rise of the military.

Achievements

As Emperor Showa, he experienced the Manchurian Incident, the Sino-Japanese War, the Pacific War, defeat in the war, and occupation reform. After the war, he became the symbolic emperor under the Japanese Constitution and assumed the role of symbol of national unity.

Character & anecdotes

The evaluation of Emperor Showa's responsibility for the war is still under debate. It is necessary to distinguish between institutional authority, actual statements, and relationships with the military and government.

Historical Impact

Learning about Emperor Showa, we can see that modern Japan's imperial system has undergone a major change from a governing system under the imperial constitution to a postwar symbolic system. War, occupation, and democratization can be seen as one flow. The process by which the symbolic emperor system was established is also considered.
