Biography

Early life

Born into a poor peasant family, he lost his family to famine and epidemics, and rose to prominence through his experiences as a monk and rebel army. The social unrest and Red Turban Rebellion at the end of the Yuan era set the stage for his rise to power.

Achievements

In 1368, he founded the Ming Dynasty and pursued the Yuan forces north. He established the Lijia system and the corvée system, strengthened the imperial dictatorship while purging meritorious subjects, and laid the foundations for Ming Dynasty politics.

Character & anecdotes

Zhu Yuanzhang is often talked about because of his low origins and strong suspicion. While the emperor was aware of the plight of the people, he solidified his rule through strict controls and purges.

Historical Impact

Studying Zhu Yuanzhang shows that dynastic change was not just a military victory, but involved a redesign of rural control, bureaucracy, and imperial power. This is an entry point for thinking about the political structure of the Ming and Qing empires. It can also be used for comparison with surrounding areas from the same era.
