Biography

Early life

Born in Havana, Spanish Cuba, he became involved in the independence movement at a young age and was imprisoned and exiled. While living in exile in Spain, Mexico, and the United States, he continued to write and organize.

Achievements

He organized the Cuban Revolutionary Party and prepared for the war of independence. In his poetry and criticism, he appealed not only for Cuban independence but also for Latin American independence and vigilance against the United States.

Character & anecdotes

José Martí participated in the War of Independence in 1895 and was killed in action. Although he was a poet, he was at the scene of the revolution, which strengthened his memory as a national hero.

Historical Impact

Studying José Martí shows that Latin American independence movements continued into the second half of the nineteenth century, developing through literature, newspapers, and exile networks. I can understand the link between anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism.
