Biography

Early life

Born in British Burma, he was involved in the Burmese Independence Army during the independence movement. Colonial rule, the advance of the Japanese military, and the chaos of postwar independence shaped the political consciousness of the military generation.

Achievements

After independence, the military rose to prominence, overthrowing the U Nu government in 1962, and establishing a revolutionary council. It promoted nationalization and one-party rule, and adopted a closed and neutral policy toward the outside world.

Character & anecdotes

Ne-Win's rule brought economic stagnation and political repression while simultaneously bringing about unification to suppress ethnic rebellions. The 1988 democracy movement was a major revolt against that system.

Historical Impact

Studying Ne Win reveals the structure in which the military assumed responsibility for national integration in post-independent Southeast Asia, and dominated politics and economics for a long period of time.
