Biography

Early life

Born into a Catholic bureaucratic family in French Indochina, he started out as a bureaucrat in the Nguyen Dynasty. Between colonial rule and ethnic movements, he searched for the image of the nation after independence.

Achievements

He established the Republic of Vietnam in 1955 and, as president, promoted anti-communist nation building. With the support of the United States, they created a system to confront North Vietnam.

Character & anecdotes

The government rapidly lost support at home and abroad amid criticism of its family rule and oppression of Buddhists. It shows that Cold War alliances do not necessarily guarantee stable state management.

Historical Impact

Studying Ngo Dinh Diem reveals that the Vietnam War involved not only the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, but also issues of postcolonial nation-building, religion, local communities, and regime legitimacy. It is also possible that it will have an impact on the institutions and memories of later generations.
