Biography

Early life

Born into the royal house of Epirus, he grew up amid the complex alliances and struggles of the age of the Diadochi. He experienced disputes over the throne and exile before developing as a military leader.

Achievements

Supporting Greek cities in southern Italy, he fought Roman armies and won at Heraclea and Asculum. His losses, however, were so great that the victories did not bring lasting success.

Character & anecdotes

He is said to have remarked that another victory like this would ruin him. The story survives in modern language as a way of questioning the quality of victory.

Historical Impact

Pyrrhus is a strong example of how battlefield victory does not guarantee political success. His campaigns help explain a period when the balance of power between the Greek and Roman worlds was changing. He is also a guide to thinking about the relationship between institutions and individuals.
