Biography

Early life

Born in the Qing court as the son of Emperor Yongzheng, he studied military, Confucianism, and administrative practices as a member of the Manchurian imperial family. He was in a position to inherit the stable imperial rule that had been in place since Emperor Kangxi.

Achievements

He carried out expeditions such as the conquest of Dzungar, greatly expanding the Qing empire. He also carried out cultural projects such as ordering the compilation of the "Siku Quanshu" in an attempt to demonstrate the legitimacy of a multi-ethnic empire.

Character & anecdotes

Emperor Qianlong enjoyed writing poetry and appreciating calligraphy and paintings, and acted as a cultural ruler himself. On the other hand, there was also the aspect that academic control became stricter, like a prison of letters.

Historical Impact

The Qianlong era was the peak of the Qing Dynasty's prosperity, but it was also a time when population growth, financial burdens, and bureaucratic corruption began to accumulate. Studying him shows that an empire's successes can sometimes prepare the next crisis. It also provides clues for thinking about the relationship between institutions and people.
