Biography

Early life

Born into the noble estate of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, he studied military education and engineering. Experiences in France and America brought him into contact with ideas of liberty and republicanism.

Achievements

In the American Revolution he contributed to fortification building, and after returning home he resisted partition by Russia, Prussia, and others. As commander in chief of the 1794 uprising, he advanced reform and mobilization.

Character & anecdotes

He mobilized peasant soldiers and sought broad participation within a society of estates. He became not only a military leader but also a symbol of social reform.

Historical Impact

Kościuszko shows that the revolutionary age of the late eighteenth century stretched across America, France, and Eastern Europe. His failed uprising was nevertheless long preserved in the memory of Polish independence movements. He is also a guide to thinking about the relationship between institutions and individuals.
