Biography

Early life

Born to the Matsudaira clan in Mikawa, he lived as a hostage under the Imagawa clan during his childhood. He acquired the political sense of survival through alliances and subordination relationships with the feudal lords of the Sengoku period.

Achievements

He defeated the Western army at the Battle of Sekigahara, became the Seii Taishogun, and established the Edo Shogunate. He solidified a new ruling order through controlling the daimyo, developing the castle town of Edo, and confronting the Toyotomi clan.

Character & anecdotes

Ieyasu is often depicted as a politician who waited and made compromises, rather than a hero of short-term battles. It is important in understanding alliances, marriage, and territorial management during the final stages of the Sengoku period.

Historical Impact

If you study Tokugawa Ieyasu, you will understand that the stability of early modern Japan was created not simply by the end of war, but by the institutionalization of the distribution of feudal lords, class order, and urban control. This is the gateway to understanding the Edo period. A stable institutional design is also visible.
