Biography

Early life

Born into the maritime commercial world around Genoa, he gained experience of Mediterranean and Atlantic navigation. He proposed reaching Asia by sailing west and, after Portugal rejected the idea, gained support from the Spanish crown.

Achievements

In 1492 he crossed the Atlantic and reached islands in the Caribbean. He believed he had reached Asia, but the voyage rapidly enlarged contact between Europe and the American continents.

Character & anecdotes

For a long time the journey was described as the discovery of a new world, but the lands he reached already held Indigenous societies. Its success was also the beginning of severe changes involving conquest, disease, and forced labor.

Historical Impact

Columbus's voyages led toward the formation of an Atlantic world of trade, migration, colonial rule, and the spread of disease. Studying him is an entry point to considering who benefited from global integration and whom it destroyed.
