Biography

Early life

Born in Langres in eastern France, he entered the world of academia and publishing in Paris. In France under the old regime, new ideas were spreading amid censorship and class order.

Achievements

Together with d'Alembert and others, he edited the Encyclopedia, which collected a wide range of science, technology, philosophy, and social criticism. By organizing and disseminating knowledge, he demonstrated an attitude of viewing society from a rational perspective without relying on authority.

Character & anecdotes

The Encyclopedia was not just a dictionary; it also placed emphasis on illustrations of craftsmanship and machinery. A characteristic of Enlightenment thought is that it treated not only academic knowledge but also practical knowledge as valuable knowledge.

Historical Impact

Studying Diderot shows that the Enlightenment was not only associated with abstract philosophy, but also with publishing, censorship, technical knowledge, and the expansion of readership. It is the key to understanding the intellectual changes before the French Revolution. It marks an era in which the disclosure of knowledge has political meaning.
