Early life

Born in Fréjus in southern France, he was educated as a clergyman. Although he belonged to the First Estate under the old regime, he became politically critical of the privileged status and acted as a representative of the Third Estate.

Achievements

In 1789, he published ``What is the Third Estate?'' and it became the ideological pillar for the establishment of the National Assembly. Even after the revolution, he remained involved in constitutional politics and participated in the coup d'etat on the 18th of Brumaire.

Character & anecdotes

Scheyes is known for arguing, ``What is the Third Estate? It is everything.'' A short question became a political phrase that fundamentally shook the old class order.
