Early life

Born in Ukraine, part of the Russian Empire, he joined the revolutionary movement at a young age. In imperial Russia, radical movements were spreading due to the combination of industrialization, rural problems, ethnic problems, and political repression.

Achievements

He became a central figure in the Petrograd Soviet during the 1917 revolution and led the October Revolution. During the civil war, he organized the Red Army and greatly contributed to the military survival of the Bolshevik regime.
