Biography

Early life

He is said to have been born into a family of military commanders who served the Qin dynasty, and was responsible for the defense of the north after Qin Shihuang's unification project. After unification, Qin was forced not only to institutionalize its internal system, but also to deal with the nomadic forces in the north.

Achievements

He led a large army and pushed the Xiongnu back north, securing control of the Ordos area. It is said that the Great Wall was constructed by connecting existing walls to strengthen the Qin Empire's control over the northern region.

Character & anecdotes

After the death of the First Emperor, Meng Tian became involved in the political upheaval led by Zhao Gao and others, and was ordered to commit suicide. Even generals with great military merit could not maintain a stable position in court politics.

Historical Impact

Studying Meng Tian reveals that the unification of Qin was supported not only by domestic institutions but also by border control with the nomadic world. The Great Wall is not just a building, but a symbol of military power, labor, and imperial control.
